LEADERS - Shaping Up Comprehension

LEADERS Handbook of Early Literacy Stragegies and Activities

Time: 10-15 minutes
Group Style: Whole group, small group, or partners
Grade Level: 1-6

Rationale

This strategy allows the students to monitor their own understanding.

Materials

Procedure

  1. After completing the text, give each student a set of shapes (square, circle, and triangle) or photocopy of the Worksheet.
  2. Each student should write on each shape.
square What you have "squared" away (What you understand)
circle Questions going around in your head
triangle Three things or points you would like to remember

Teacher Comments

  • Using cut out shapes instead of a worksheet could lead to creation of a poster about the story or topic for display in your room.
